O'Neil tried out for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early months of 2005 while still at high school. The judges were impressed with her singing and she made it into the Top 100 Round. O'Neil had received high praise by the judges. But she was a victim of major defeats in the top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. She was placed within the bottom three and then in the bottom two. The judges were shocked at the result and exhorted viewers to show support for singers with impressive singing skills similar to Melissa. O'Neil's performance was consistent that he never fell into the bottom 3. O'Neil and her fellow contestants Rex Goudie and Werner delivered two spectacular performances in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that the headlines would state that O'Neil had defeated Goudie and was the third Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and the youngest winner in Idol history. O'Neil got a phone call from Canadian premier Paul Martin to congratulate her on her win at Canadian Idol.
